High School Roundup: Sailors win Otay Ranch Tournament

Otay Ranch Tournament

CHULA VISTA — Newport Harbor High beat Valley Center, 1-0, to win the championship Saturday.

Senior captain Allie Pantoskey scored for the Sailors.

Senior goalkeeper Andie Ward had nine saves throughout three wins.

Emily Mitchell, Madison Wooters, Sophie Evans, and Courtney McIntosh were key players throughout the day.

Newport Harbor beat Bonita Vista, 2-0, in the semifinals. Senior Annie Pyle and junior Taury Hlinka scored. The sailors defeated Canyon Crest, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. Junior Jill Messersmith scored both goals, with an assist by junior Taury Hlinka.

The Sailors play host to Louisville Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. at Davidson Field.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 11, Coronado 10

NEWPORT BEACH — Sailors senior Sam Edson fired in a shot from the left post with 1.28 seconds to give the Tars the nonconference win Saturday.

Senior Farrel South led the Sailors with five goals. Juniors Dan Stevens and Preston Lee scored two goals each and Andrew Silvers added one.

Senior goalie Koby Yokota had seven saves, including a five-meter penalty shot.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 11, St. Ignatius 7

NEWPORT BEACH — The No. 2 doubles team of Kimberly Brown and Lauren Hsu swept to help the Lightning beat the team from San Francisco for the first time in a nonleague match at The Tennis Club Newport Beach Saturday.

The No. 3 doubles team of Ava Soleimany and Molly Wang also swept, while No. 1 singles player Liana Korber and No. 3 singles player Casey Astorino won twice for Sage Hill (4-0).

The Lightning play at West Ranch Monday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Woodbridge Invitational

Robert Blackwell finished eighth in 15 minutes, 42 seconds in Division IV to help the Costa Mesa High boys finish 14th Friday.

Kristi Adams led the Costa Mesa girls, finishing 103rd in 20:50, as the Mustangs finished 26th.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

The Bishop’s def. Sage Hill

LA JOLLA — Freshman outside hitter Halland McKenna had 12 kills for the Lightning but The Bishop’s rallied for an 18-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 win Saturday night.

Freshman Maddy Abbott had 35 assists and three service aces for Sage (2-3), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA. Coach Dan Thomassen highlighted her play as his team didn’t have senior setter Alayna Lewis (college visit).

Senior middle blocker Zoe Kreitenberg had eight kills and four blocks. Sophomore libero Claudia Noto had 16 digs for Sage Hill, which plays host to Calvary Chapel on Tuesday.
