Locals bow out early in FIVB Moscow event

April Ross, playing with Lauren Fendrick for the first time this season, lost in Round 2 of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball World Tour beach tournament, completed on Sunday in Moscow, Russia.
Ross, a Costa Mesa resident and Newport Harbor High product, teamed with Fendrick to win their two matches in Pool H on Thursday. The Americans topped Jolien Sinnema and Joy Stubbe of the Netherlands 21-14, 21-13 and defeated fellow Americans Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar, 21-15, 21-19, also on Thursday.
Ross and Fendrick fell to Karla Borger and Margareta Kozuch of Germany 25-23, 23-21 in a 44-minute Round 2 match and were eliminated on Friday.
Costa Mesa resident Sara Hughes and partner Kelly Claes were 1-1 in Pool A, but were eliminated in Round 1. They lost to eventual runners-up Brooke Sweat and Summer Ross of the United States 21-16, 21-15 in 27 minutes.
In the men’s event, Huntington Beach resident Jake Gibb, playing with Taylor Crabb, went 0-2 in Pool D on Thursday and did not advance.
Ross and Sweat lost to Brazilians Larissa Franca Maestrini and Talita Da Rocha Antunes 21-16, 21-14 in the women’s final Sunday.
