Laguna Beach’s McKeown retains title of Orange Coast MVP
For the second year in a row, Laguna Beach High’s Lexi McKeown has taken home the honor of most valuable player in Orange Coast League girls’ volleyball competition.
The award was handed out after the senior outside hitter helped the Breakers to their 12th consecutive outright girls’ volleyball league title, a streak that began as soon as the Breakers joined the league in 2006.
Sophomore setter Peri Brennan, sophomore outside hitter Piper Naess and sophomore opposite Soren Patchell were added to the first team for the Breakers, who went 10-0 in league.
Laguna Beach won 120 matches in a row within the Orange Coast League. The Breakers will transition to the Sunset League next fall.
This season, the Breakers were 19-7 overall. Laguna Beach earned the No. 3 seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs, advancing to the quarterfinals before bowing out against Pasadena Westridge 26-24, 17-25, 27-25, 25-21.
The middle blocking duo of freshman Jacquelyn Strawn and sophomore Cambria Hall were named to the second team. Hallie Carballo, a sophomore libero, was also a second-team selection.
Over the course of its Orange Coast League winning streak, Laguna Beach surrendered seven sets to league foes. One of those belonged to this year’s Costa Mesa Mustangs.
Costa Mesa senior outside hitter Courtney Moore, sophomore setter Malia Tufuga and senior middle blocker Felicia Crenshaw were named to the first team after leading the Mustangs to a second-place finish in league.
It is the third such selection for Crenshaw, while Moore and Tufuga are repeating as first-team honorees.
Costa Mesa (19-6, 8-2 in league) defeated Tustin in the first round of the Division 5 playoffs before falling to top-seeded Thousand Oaks La Reina 25-13, 25-21, 25-20.
Junior setter Ashley Nguyen and sophomore libero Rae Galarion were selected to the second team for the Mustangs.
Estancia seniors Sarah Graham (outside hitter) and Sophie Beazley (opposite) were named to the second team.
The Eagles (9-11, 2-8) placed fifth in league.
Graham’s hitting percentage of .163 was second on the team. She parlayed that number into a team-high 151 kills.
Beazley was third among the Eagles in service aces with 29. She added 59 kills.
