Week 10 High School Football Preview: Ocean View vs. Orange
When/where: Friday, 7 p.m. at Ocean View High
Key Seahawks: Jr. QB-DB Noah Hickman; Sr. RB-DB Noah De Loera; Sr. TE-DL Adam Meyer
Key Panthers: Sr. QB-DB Jason Wilkinson (104 of 180 passing for 1,645 yards, 20 TDs and 10 INTs; 56 carries for 187 yards and five TDs; 16 tackles, one INT); Sr. RB-CB Syrus Collins (54 carries for 459 yards and three TDs; 56 catches for 764 yards and 10 TDs; 13 tackles, one INT); Sr. WR-CB Jordan Schmidt (44 catches for 874 yards and nine TDs; 41 tackles, three INTs, one fumble recovery)
Breakdown: Orange and Ocean View are ranked fifth and eighth, respectively, in the CIF Southern Section Division 13 poll, but nothing is guaranteed about their playoff status. The Panthers went 7-3 overall last year, but they placed fourth in the Golden West League at 2-3 and were not given an at-large playoff berth … Ocean View (5-4, 1-3 in league) needs a win and help to get in. A win plus a Segerstrom (6-3, 2-2) loss to Santa Ana (8-1, 4-0) would forge a three-way tie for third place, along with Orange (7-2, 2-2). Seahawks coach Luis Nuñez said that the coin flips performed in case that scenario played out went favorably. The Seahawks would receive the Golden West League’s third seed if the three-way tie occurs. An Orange win combined with a Segerstrom loss would give the Panthers the league’s third seed. Ocean View is 3-2 against Orange since Nuñez became the Seahawks’ head coach in 2012.
