Breakdown: Laguna Beach (5-5) enters its first-round game in the CIF Southern Section Division 12 playoffs at Temecula Rancho Christian (7-3) on a roll. The Breakers averaged 36 points per game during their final four Orange Coast League wins, allowing them to secure second place and a postseason berth. After a 40-21 win over Estancia on Oct. 27, Breakers quarterback Curtis Harrison said his team had turned the corner. In the season finale last week against Calvary Chapel, second-year Breakers coach John Shanahan said his team took another step forward, starting an all-senior defensive line of Pasha Dasmalchi, Garrett Tyler, Jackson Spencer and Henry Syvertsen for the first time this year. “It at least appeared to us that night that it made a dramatic difference,” Shanahan said of the veteran defensive front. “It’s a huge difference for kids that are seniors that are playing potentially their last football game.” Laguna Beach could be in a shootout with Rancho Christian. The Eagles, the South Valley League champions, produced 34.6 points per game. Last year, Rancho Christian and Laguna Beach missed each other in the playoffs, as the Eagles won the Division 13 title and the Breakers lost in the semifinals.
