Where/When: 7 p.m. Friday at Tesoro High.
Key Oilers: Jr. QB/FS Arick McLawyer (four of five passing for 39 yards and one TD; nine carries for 60 yards and two TDs; eight catches for 111 yards and one TD; seven tackles, one INT, and one forced fumble); Jr. WR/CB Isaac Bryant (six catches for 58 yards and two TDs); Sr. SS Nick Napoli (14 tackles, two passes defensed, one tackle for a loss).
Key Titans: Sr. QB Chase Petersen (6-foot-4, 220 pounds; 534 passing yards for six TDs); Sr. WR John Cody (6-foot-1, 180 pounds; two receiving touchdowns, one game of 100-plus receiving yards); Jr. WR/DB Joe Morenc (6-foot-3, 195 pounds; one receiving touchdown, one game of 100-plus receiving yards).
Breakdown: The Oilers (0-2) and the Titans (0-2) meet at the same stage of the season as they did a year ago. The biggest difference is that both are still looking for their first win of the season, making this Week 2 matchup as close to a must-win game as a nonleague contest can be. In 2016, Huntington Beach held a 21-20 second-half lead against the Titans, but a fake punt turned the game on its head when Chase Petersen hooked up with Joe Morenc for a 63-yard touchdown. Defensive end Derek Thomas had 15½ sacks as a senior, and the Oilers recorded 33½ sacks as a team last year. Huntington Beach has just one sack this season, which was recorded by middle linebacker John Gosney against San Clemente. Petersen threw for 322 yards and four TDs in Tesoro’s near upset of Edison in Week 0, but the Titans were largely held in check by La Habra last week.
