MEN’S BASKETBALL
UC Irvine 61, UC Davis 59
DAVIS — Senior Chris McNealy had 11 points and eight rebounds to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.
UCI (16-9, 7-2 in conference) trailed by 11 early in the second half, but chipped away before taking a 55-53 advantage with 6:13 left on a layup by Mamadou Ndiaye.
UC Davis (8-16, 3-6) led, 59-57, with 2:49 left, but Luke Nelson had three straight points to put UCI ahead for good.
The win propelled UCI into sole possession of first place in conference. UC Santa Barbara, which had been tied with UCI atop the standings, was idle Saturday.
Ndiaye had 10 points, three rebounds and one blocked shot, while Dominique Dunning and Aaron Wright added 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench.
UCI shot 53.1% from the field and held Davis (8-16, 3-6) to 33.9% field-goal shooting (19 for 56).
UCI returns to action on Saturday against visiting UC Riverside at 7 p.m.

Biola 72, Vanguard 64
LA MIRADA — The visiting Lions shot 30.1% from the field to see their 13-game winning streak snapped in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.
It was the first conference loss for No. 9-ranked Vanguard (20-3, 7-1), which retains a two-game lead over Biola (11-5, 5-3) and Concordia.
Preston Wynne had 22 points and Chris Gorman added 16 for the Lions, who were 22 for 73 from the field and five for 24 from three-point range (20.8%).
Biola shot 53.3% from the field (24 for 54).

Vanguard 76, Biola 53
LA MIRADA — Senior point guard Taylor Belmont had 21 points and eight assists to lead the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.
Ashleigh Anderson had 15 points and six rebounds and Samantha Doucette had 14 points and seven rebounds for the No. 1-ranked Lions (19-0, 8-0 in conference).
The Lions were 10 for 22 from three-point range (45.5%).
Biola is 8-16, 3-5.

BASEBALL
Doubleheader
SANTA BARBARA — Bret Collins drove in two runs to help the visiting Lions claim Game 2 of the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader, 5-3, on Saturday, after Westmont won the opener, 6-2.
In the Vanguard win, Thomas Mobley and Greg Younger also drove in runs, while Scott Torrey pitched four innings to improve to 3-0.
Vanguard had just five hits in Game 1, in which Nick Rodda was two for four with two RBIs.
Vanguard is 9-2, 4-2 in conference.
Westmont is 5-6, 3-6.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The visiting Pirates had 10 players contribute to their 12-hit attack, but absorbed their first loss of the season in the nonconference game Saturday.
OCC (4-1), ranked No. 2 in Southern California, allowed eight hits to the No. 10-ranked Cougars (1-4).

Triton Invitational
LA JOLLA — No. 5-ranked UC Irvine defeated No. 12-ranked Long Beach State, 7-4, and topped Cal State East Bay, 21-4, in tournament action on Saturday.
Michaela Pierandozzi and Danielle Warde had four goals each against Cal State East Bay.
UCI (8-2) continues tournament play on Sunday.

Doubleheader
Host Vanguard University swept Pomona Pitzer in a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday.
In the opening game, Haley Croce tripled in the game-winning run in the seventh inning of a 2-1 triumph.
In the second game, Vanguard freshman Emily Russell threw a complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win.
Russell allowed six hits, walked one and did not strike out a batter to earn her first collegiate win.
Shelby Kuryllo and Taylor Hallahan were both three for four with two runs batted in in Game 2 and Jo Karia Jimenez was four for six with two RBIs in the two games combined.
Vanguard is 6-2.
Pomona Pitzer is 0-5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Stanford def. UC Irvine
STANFORD — Senior middle blocker Scott Kevorken had eight kills and hit .538 for the visiting No. 9-ranked Anteaters, who were swept in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19, Saturday.
Zack La Cavera had nine kills for the Anteaters (7-7, 4-6 in conference), who hit .210 as a team, 171 points worse than the Cardinal.
No. 7-ranked Stanford is 7-4, 4-4.

Vanguard 9, Arizona Christian 0
Roger Muri won 12 of 14 singles games and teamed with Stefan Kilchhofer to earn an 8-1 doubles win to pace the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.
Muri won at No. 2 singles, while Kilchhofer won 12 of 15 games at No. 1 singles.
No. 3-ranked Vanguard is 1-1, 1-1 in conference, as is Arizona Christian.
