High School Roundup: CdM boys’ tennis dominates

CORONA DEL MAR — Chaz Downing won 18 of 20 games to sweep at No. 2 singles for host Corona del Mar High, which trounced Brentwood, 16-2, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Wednesday.

No. 2-seeded CdM (19-2) plays the first-round winner between Loyola and Santa Margarita in the second round on Friday.

CdM would visit Loyola or play host to Santa Margarita.

Linfield Christian 14, Estancia 4

COSTA MESA — The senior doubles team of Matt Thomas and Robert Marone swept, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, to account for almost all of the host Eagles points in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs on Wednesday.

Estancia, which shared the championship of the Orange Coast League, finishes 15-5.

Sage Hill 12, Whitney 0

NEWPORT COAST — Senior Max Strohman pitched a complete-game four-hitter to lead the host Lightning in the Academy League game Wednesday.

Strohman struck out nine and walked three. He was also two for four at the plate to help Sage Hill improve to 13-6, 9-5 in league.

Colby Bock and Harrison Rhee each had two hits and two runs batted in, while Kellen Ochi and Adam Ellingson had two hits apiece for the winners.

IRVINE — Junior Nolan McCarthy hit a three-run home run to lead the visiting Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Wednesday.

COSTA MESA — Tyler Rios pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run on seven hits for the host Eagles in the Orange Coast League game Wednesday.

Ben Beck went two for three with two stolen bases for Estancia (16-8, 9-5 in league).

The two teams play today at Vanguard University.
