Track & Field: UCI’s Aikhionbare repeats as Big West Athlete of the Week

UC Irvine sophomore Itos Aikhionbare has been named Big West Conference Field Athlete of the Week in women’s track and field for the third time this season.

Aikhionbare won the shotput with a mark of 51 feet, 5 inches at the Oxy Invitational on Saturday. That’s the second-best throw in UCI history as she closes in on the school record of 51-9 ¾ set by Alisha Misiaita in 2009.

Aikhionbare ranks first in the Big West this season in the shotput (51-5) and discus throw (169-5). Her discus mark, recorded at the Beach Invitational April 20, is a school record.

The Anteaters compete in the Big West Conference championships Friday and Saturday at Cal State Northridge.
