Crumlich, Hillman lead UCI to win

UC Irvine 9, Sacramento State 5
IRVINE — Junior shortstop D.J. Crumlich went four for five with two runs batted in and senior left fielder Drew Hillman homered, tripled and had four RBIs to pace the host Anteaters in the first of a three-game nonconference series Friday at Anteater Ballpark.
Junior first baseman Jordan Fox had two hits as the first five spots in the UCI batting order accounted for all 10 of the team’s hits.
Nick Hoover tossed 3 2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief to earn the win, taking over for starter Matt Summers, who yielded six hits and four runs, two earned, in 4 1/3.
UCI scored four in the first and Summers had an 8-3 lead going into the fifth.
Crumlich is now hitting .451, while Hillman is batting .447. Fox is hitting .418.
UCI (10-1), ranked No. 18 in the USA Today/ ESPN poll, plays host to the Hornets today at 2 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
UC Irvine 5, Sacramento State 2
IRVINE — Becka Kwan and Courtney Byron won in singles and doubles to help the host Anteaters win the nonconference match Friday.
It was the fourth straight win, the second straight over a top-40-ranked team, for the Anteaters (6-7).
Kwan won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and teamed with Holladay to earn the Anteaters’ lone doubles triumph in the No. 1 spot.
Holladay won at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Courtney Byron (No. 1), Kristina Smith (No. 3) and Franziska Goettsching (No. 4) also had singles wins.

Doubleheader
COSTA MESA — The host Lions earned a split against nonconference visitor Holy Names on Friday.
Vanguard won the second game, 6-4, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break a 4-4 tie in the seven-inning contest.
Kaysie Flasck and Kari Bergerson had two hits each for the Lions (11-8), for whom Elizabeth Archer drove in two runs.
Holy Names (7-8) scored in the eight inning to claim a 1-0 opening-game triumph.
Vanguard pitcher Stacie Salazar struck out 11, allowed four hits and no earned runs to take the hard-luck loss.

POMONA — UC Irvine defeated Redlands, 17-6, and Pomona-Pitzer, 18-4, in its two matches Friday.
Danielle Warde had three goals in each victory for UCI (10-6).
