Locals honored in Orange Coast League
Senior midfielder Dong-Gi Shin is one of three Costa Mesa High players earning first-team All-Orange Coast League honors in boys’ soccer after helping the Mustangs finish third in league and qualify for the CIF Southern Section playoffs for the first time in nine seasons.
Senior midfielder Jesus Estrada and junior striker Jorge Sanchez joined Shin on the first team. The three players led the Mustangs (9-10-4, 4-4-2 in league) to a 4-3 victory against Muir of Pasadena in a Division IV wild-card playoff match.
Estancia senior goalkeeper Alex Vega also received first-team recognition. He made 143 saves and recorded one shutout for the Eagles (3-14-3, 1-7-2). Estancia finished in last place in league.
Shin finished with a team-best 11 goals and added eight assists.
Estrada, a repeat first-team selection, led the Mustangs with 10 assists and contributed five goals.
Sanchez had seven goals and three assists.
Costa Mesa junior midfielder Kevin Parra and senior goalkeeper Peter Salas made the second team.
Estancia senior midfielder Carlos Arriaza was a second-team pick.
Godinez’ Fidel Nieves was the league MVP.
