Briefs: Polar Bear tourney held at Main Beach

The sixth annual Laguna Beach Christmas Polar Bear Beach Volleyball Tournament and Toy Drive was held Dec. 13 at Main Beach. The winners in each division were: Open Division: Adam Lythgoe, Jon Pflueger, Patrick Halliday and Don Saunders; Social Division: Craig Lawson, Kayla Moore, Therese DeGroot and Jenna Miller.

In 2015, the following Laguna Open beach volleyball tournament dates have been announced: Laguna Women’s Open, May 9; Laguna Men’s Open, June 6-7; Girls’ 16-and-Under Tournament, July 9; Girls’ 14-and-Under Tournament, July 10; King and Queen tournaments (October, TBA); Holiday 4-Man Tournament (December, TBA).

USA, Italy play to 10-10 draw

The USA Water Polo Men’s Senior National Team, which includes Nolan McConnell of Laguna Beach, played the Italian Men’s National Team to a 10-10 tie last Sunday at Newport Harbor High. Bret Bonanni (Huntington Beach) led Team USA, which held leads of 8-4 and 10-7 in the fourth quarter, with three goals.

The teams played a second exhibition game on Tuesday at Pomona Pitzer Colleges. The third and final game of the three-match series is on Saturday (Jan. 3) at USC. Tickets for Saturday’s match are available at www.usawaterpolo.com.
