High School Roundup: Corona del Mar girls’ soccer hangs on to beat Edison

Erin Jones had two goals as the Corona del Mar High School girls’ soccer team beat Edison 2-1 on Thursday in a Surf League opener at Edison High.
Payton Vovan had an assist for CdM (5-3-2), while Jones’ second goal came after a shot by Erin Galvin went off the goalpost.
Edison (2-5-2) converted Jacque Peterson’s penalty kick in the 80th minute to account for the Chargers’ scoring.
Goalkeeper Sydney Walls made seven saves for CdM, while coach Bryan Middleton highlighted the defense of Brea Sofferman and Jane Paulsen.
CdM hosts Los Alamitos on Tuesday, while Edison hosts Huntington Beach.
Newport Harbor 1, Marina 0 (OT): Laine Briggs scored one minute into overtime, assisted by Brielle Benedict, to lift the Sailors in Thursday’s Wave League opener at Newport Harbor High.
Goalkeeper Jessica Gardner made two saves for Newport Harbor (6-1-1), which earned its third straight shutout.
Marina fell to 4-2-2 overall.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Corona del Mar 14, Marina 4: Sophia Andrei-Birca won two singles sets for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at CdM.
The doubles teams of Bridget Anderson and Chloe Mirhashemi, Ashley Gehl and Anne Gibson, as well as Katie Barnes and Lena Pham, all won once for CdM (5-1). Lauren Avenatti won once in singles.
SOFTBALL
Newport Harbor 7, Trabuco Hills 6 (eight innings): Lindsey Blanchfield had a walk-off sacrifice fly to cap a two-for-four day at the plate with two runs batted in for the host Sailors in Thursday’s nonleague game.
The sacrifice fly scored Lily Larkins the winning run.
Eliana Gottlieb had two hits and drove in three runs, and Maddy Bibona added two doubles and two RBIs.
McKayla Cotton, who went the distance in the pitching circle to pick up the win, also had two hits in the game for Newport Harbor (6-3).
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Newport Harbor 3, Los Alamitos 0: Brendan Read had a team-high 13 kills with three service aces to lead the Sailors to a 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 sweep of the Griffins on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover match at home.
Rees Classen and Jake Read each had eight kills, and James Eadie had seven kills for Newport Harbor (2-1).
