Letters to the Editor: Activist targeting Scott Peotter is an ‘obstructionist’ with a political ‘vendetta’
- Share via
Saying it often doesn’t make it true. Susan Skinner’s letter to the editor of June 5 is an exercise in fantasy (“Commentary: Recall of Councilman Scott Peotter is justified, necessary”).
Skinner is a well-known obstructionist with a personal vendetta against Councilman Scott Peotter. The councilman is a conservative Republican and property rights advocate; Skinner isn’t.
When she doesn’t get her way, she sues the city, at great cost to taxpayers. Skinner calls for Peotter’s recall because he stood up for private property rights in supporting the Museum House project. After a two-year planning process, the project was approved unanimously by the Planning Commission and by the City Council on a 6-1 vote.
Skinner claims the Line in the Sand Political Action Committee (PAC) raises its money “mostly in small amounts from many people who support its goals.”
Not the case.
Public records filed under the penalty of perjury confirm that Skinner has a PAC of her own, Newport 1st.
Why should taxpayers write a $300,000 check for Susan Skinner’s political vendetta?
Why doesn’t she just run against Peotter in 2018 and save taxpayers the money?

Desalination project is unnecessary
Desalination by the Orange County Water District (OCWD), such as the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), has been wonderful for water recycling, but the Poseidon ocean desalination project currently being considered by the OCWD is up to four times the cost, and if done as requested by Poseidon, requires the public to pay for piping infrastructure, etc., and for water we do not need but will be forced to buy for 50 years.
North Orange County has the advantage over South Orange County of a large groundwater storage basin. Making better use of its storage capacity in combination with conservation is the most effective and efficient response to our longterm water needs. Should a time come for us to do ocean desalination, it should be done through an appropriate agency determination that includes an analysis by the agency of need, appropriate size, location, technology, environmental considerations and a bid process.
