Girl Scouts think ahead with worm project

Fourteen Girl Scouts from Troop 1756 in Huntington Beach revisited their Girl Scout Bronze Award-winning project at Smith Elementary and Dwyer Middle schools.

The award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior — fourth- and fifth-graders — can achieve.

Their “take action” project was the introduction of vermi-composting to the schools. The girls wanted to reduce food waste at the schools and found worm composting would accomplish that goal and was sustainable, according to a news release.

The girls worked with sponsor Enrecos, school principals and teachers to create the site and a training program for future students.

When the troop revisited the sites they found that current second-graders are continuing the project.
