Woman pleads not guilty in bank door smashings

A Missouri woman pleaded not guilty this week to five charges related to smashed doors at two Corona del Mar banks.

Rebecca Kathleen Netherton, 34, of Kansas City, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two felony counts of vandalism, one felony count of burglary, one felony of count of receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer, court records show.

Police earlier this week said they saw Netherton trying to break the doors of an Albertsons with a fire extinguisher at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. They later determined she stole the extinguisher from a Bank of America branch at Marguerite Avenue and East Coast Highway after smashing the doors there, police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said Monday.

Netherton is also suspected of smashing in the doors of a Citibank branch at 3021 E. Coast Hwy., Lowe said.

The only other stolen property was a pair of scissors from the Bank of America, police said.

She remains in Orange County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Netherton is scheduled to have a pretrial hearing Jan. 24, according to Orange County District Attorney spokeswoman Farrah Emami.
