Van catches fire right before smog check

The Huntington Beach Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that erupted as a van was getting prepped for a smog check.

Firefighters responded to a call at Pro Smog, 7652 Slater Ave. No. 5, about noon Friday after a fire erupted from a van right when it was rolled into the smog bay area for a check, said Deputy Fire Marshal Jeff Lopez.

With the help of a sprinkler that was activated directly above the van, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within five minutes.

The van had handgun ammunitions in it, but they were not the cause of the fire, Lopez said.

Property damage to Pro Smog is estimated at $5,000, but could be more once some of the shop’s equipment, which was tossed in water, are tested, Lopez said. The estimated damage to the van is $1,900.

There were no injuries.
