Police checkpoint slated for Thursday
Newport Beach police will be mounting a checkpoint outside their headquarters Thursday.
From 7:30 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday, officers will be stopping cars on northbound Jamboree Road at Santa Barbara Drive, where the police department sits on the corner and arrestees are booked and taken to jail.
Police officials chose the location because of its proximity to bars and restaurants. Drivers will be given a brochure on the dangers of drinking and driving when they’re stopped by police.
Checkpoints serve as reminders to the public about the dangers of drunk driving and that police are enforcing the laws, officials said.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety.
