Russell Hill honored in education

Laguna Beach resident Russell Hill recently received the Middle School Advisor of the Year Award from Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement, a nationally recognized math and science program.

Hill, who teaches sixth-grade math and science at Raymond Villa Fundamental Intermediate School located in Santa Ana, has been a MESA advisor for eight years, and was honored for his outstanding work in assisting educationally disadvantaged students to excel in math and science, who are served by the Chapman University MESA center.

MESA is an academic preparation program administered by the University of California that serves more than 20,000 California middle, high school, community college and university students who are educationally disadvantaged.

Although 70% of schools served by the program are among the lowest performing schools in the state, nearly two-thirds of MESA high school graduates go on to college as math, engineering or science majors.

Adoption of textbooks

The textbook for the Mandarin course, Ni Hao, Volume 1 (Traditional), will be on display for public review from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Wednesday at the Laguna Beach Unified School District’s Administrative Office, 550 Blumont St.
