Skateboarder claims car hit him
Police are investigating a 15-year-old’s report that a driver deliberately hit him while he was skateboarding July 28, Lt. Jason Kravetz said.
The skateboarder said he and a 13-year-old companion, both from Laguna Beach, were on Temple Hills Drive between Brooks and Oak streets when they saw a vehicle approaching them. The 15-year-old said they motioned for driver to pass them.
Instead, the driver sped up and aimed at him, the teenager alleged, knocking him to the ground against a wall.
Kravetz said the skateboarder told police that the driver then jumped out of his vehicle and accused the boys of flipping him off and then called them a menace to society.
The boys denied flipping off the driver, Kravetz said.
The issue of skateboarding in Laguna Beach has reached a fever pitch with some residents calling for a ban on the sport.
Kravetz said the police have enough information to proceed with an investigation against the driver on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon—the vehicle. The vehicle was described as an older model Mercedes Benz with Nevada plates. The suspect was described as a 50-to 60-year-old white male, 200 to 250 pounds.
The skateboarder sustained scrapes and pain in his hip, according to Sgt. Louise Callus.
Anyone with information about the incident, which was reported at 3:05 p.m., can contact Kravetz at [email protected] or (949) 497-0307.
