Hunt competed in the boardercross, half pipe and slopestyle disciplines in the menehune boys’ division (ages 10-11). He finished in 42nd-place in both the boardercross and half-pipe events and was 35th in slopestyle.

He came into the competition ranked 110th, overall, but left it with a No. 39 ranking.

There were168 regional champions competing in his age group.

“It was a lot of fun to meet other boys and girls from all over the country,” Hunt said. “It was cool to see all of their different riding styles. I learned that you should have one run in the half pipe and in slopestyle that you can land cleanly no matter what the conditions are. After you land that, you can go big on your second run and try your biggest tricks.

“In boardercross it helps to have your board waxed between each run. Having coaches that can help with that makes a big difference.”

While at Nationals, Hunt was invited to attend the Park City Snowboard Academy next winter. The academy is limited to 25 students in grades sixth through 12.

“I am really excited about the possibility of going to the academy in Park City next winter,” Hunt said. “It is where all of the US Olympic riders train and their coaches are amazing riders. I got to ride with some kids on their team and they are all super-friendly. Their coaches are super nice also and helped me at Nationals even though I wasn’t on their team.

“They are going to train on a glacier on Mt. Hood for three weeks this summer and I am hoping my parents will let me join them.”

Sammy Swanson, 11, of Costa Mesa also had earned a spot at the USASA National Championships but didn’t compete. He suffered abroken collar bone while training the week before leaving for Nationals. He had qualified in slopestyle, half Pipe and boardercross in the menehune boys’ division.

It marked the first time in five seasons that Swanson missed nationals.
