Sea documentary showing April 9

In the fourth of its “sea tales” documentary series, “The Kansei Project” will be shown by the Laguna Beach Film Society at 7 p.m. April 9 at the Forum Theater on the Festival of Arts Grounds, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.

The film depicts the enormous island of plastic garbage in the Pacific, 1,000 miles north of Hawaii.

Size matters in Israeli comedy film

The Laguna Beach Film Society will present “A Matter of Size” at 7 p.m. April 15 at South Coast Cinemas.

The Israeli comedy tells the story of Herzl, who after years of dieting is still fat and frustrated, until he meets Kitano, a former Sumo coach who is the restaurant manager where he works.

Herzl persuades Kitano to teach him and his three buddies how to be star Sumo wrestlers.

World music and wine event set

Laguna Beach Live will present a special musical event from 6 to 8 p.m. April 16 at the Woman’s Club, 286 St. Ann’s Drive.

Inside World Music & Wine Tasting features the sounds of Brazil by Leo Nobre and Nobresil Band, beginning with a demonstration of Brazilian rhythms, accompanied by a samba instructor, and a South American wine-tasting.

Mariachi women to perform

Laguna Beach Live will present Grammy and Latin Grammy award-nominated Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles in concert, 8 to 10 p.m. May 1 at Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road.

The all-woman professional mariachi band has toured internationally.

Classical guitarist Sack at college

Alexander Sack, an award-winning classical guitarist, who performs on an electric guitar, will play from 3 to 4:30 p.m. May 2 at Laguna College of Art & Design, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.

The free concert is part of the First Sundays series sponsored by LCAD and Laguna Beach Live.

Wendt names sales director

Linda Steinberg has joined Wendt Gallery as national sales director, bringing 25 years of industry and private collector experience to the gallery, according to an announcement from Joseph and Serina Manqueros, gallery owners.

Steinberg will be in charge of all sales activities, departments and personnel involved in sales and marketing for the company, as well as providing leadership for the day-to-day operations of the sales department and maintaining the company’s strategic goals.

Wendt has locations in the U.S., Europe and Asia dedicated to Modernism, American and Southeast Asian art.

LOCA members exhibit at Susi Q

Works by instructor artists and participants of the LOCA programs will be shown at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St., through April 29.

Acrylics, oils, watercolors, jewelry, monoprints, paper and mixed media, and mosaic tiles are now on display. Artists include Roger Folk, Jacquie Moffett, Carol Swanson, Carolyn Machado and Mada Leach, as well as two- and three-dimensional work by participants in LOCA classes.

This exhibit is made possible by a grant from the Laguna Beach Rotary Club. The show may be seen from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. A percentage of the sales are returned to the Susi Q for its community arts exhibits and programs.

‘Art That’s Small’ honors announced

The 2010 “Art That’s Small at City Hall” exhibition drew 126 entries from throughout Orange County, more than any previous year. Councilman Kelly Boyd announced the winners Thursday.

The adjudicators for the competition were JoAnne Artman (First Thursday’s Art Walk); Tom Lamb (Festival of Arts); and Susan Wade (Sawdust Art Festival). Each year, City Hall employees vote and select City Hall Choice.

Winners were:

Second: John Patzold

Third: Barbara White

City Hall Choice: Tom Griffithe

Honorable Mention: Jennie Breeze; Ene Rahu; April Raber; Michele Taylor.

The art works will be on exhibit at City Hall throughout April at 505 Forest Ave. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Banner contest selections made

Four designs from 44 entries to the annual Banner Competition were selected by the Arts Commission on March 22, City Manager Ken Frank said.

The designs selected were by Christopher Claiborne, Colleen Corbett, Patrick Moran and Ene Rahu and will be displayed at Main Beach.

The entire collection will be displayed throughout the city from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This program is funded by the lodging establishments and the city of Laguna Beach.
