Barona Collegiate Cup
LAKESIDE — UC Irvine senior John Chin shot four-under-par 68 to win the individual title at the 54-hole event completed Friday at Barona Creek Golf Club.
Chin’s three-round total of 12-under 204 was three shots better than San Diego State’s Johan Carlsson.
UCI was second in the 16-team event, 22 shots off the pace of San Diego State.’
UCI’s Max Greil finished 10th (126) and Bryan Harris was 36th (223).
BASEBALL
Nevada 5, UC Irvine 3
RENO — The host Wolf Pack touched All-American starter Danny Bibona for five runs, all earned, on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings and held off a late rally to win the nonconference series opener Friday.
Bibona, who took the loss to fall to 3-2, saw his earned-run average swell from 2.23 to 2.89.
UCI’s hits came from nine different players, including back-to-back doubles with one out in the ninth by Drew Hillman and Tommy Reyes to bring the potential tying run to the plate.
But Nevada reliever Beau Witsoe retired the final two hitters to record the save.
Brian Hernandez hit his first homer as an Anteater and Jonathan Hurst also drove in a run for No. 13-ranked UCI (13-7), which saw its six-game win streak snapped.
Nevada is 11-10.
SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
COSTA MESA — Angela St. Croix went two for three with two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead Vanguard University to a 9-3 win in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader against Williams Friday.
Pitcher Patricia Olvera struck out six, while allowing two hits in her complete-game win that gave the Lions a 2-1 victory in the nightcap. Williams’ run came unearned. Adriana Venezia went one for two with an RBI in the second game for Vanguard (20-14).
WOMEN’S TENNIS
UNLV 5, UC Irvine 2
LAS VEGAS — The Anteaters’ Brooke Bartlett and Kristina Smith won in singles in the nonconference match Friday.
UCI dropped to 7-7.
