UC Irvine 9, San Diego 1

IRVINE — Senior first baseman Jeff Cusick drove in three runs and belted his third home run of the season to pace the host Anteaters, ranked No. 15, in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Brian Hernandez and Jordan Fox drove in two runs apiece, while Ryan Fisher and Tommy Reyes had two hits and one RBI apiece for the winners (10-6).

Senior Kyle Necke pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless, four-hit relief to earn his first win in three decisions this season and junior Crosbly Slaught made his season debut with 1 2/3 scoreless innings for UCI.

Slaught had been out with a tendor elbow, then an inflamed elbow caused by what was believed to be an insect bite.

UCI opens a three-game nonconference series Friday at home against Gonzaga at 6 p.m.

Cypress 8

COSTA MESA — The host Pirates erased a 7-0 deficit in the Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday.

Sam Michaels was five for five with three runs and one run batted in and shortstop Jordan Beck went three for four with two RBIs and two runs for the winners (11-8, 3-4 in conference).

Daniel Warwick allowed one run in three innings to get the win and Andy Abrams worked two scoreless innings for the save. Mykal Stokes and Kris Martin had two hits each. Stokes had a hit and an RBI, and Martin had two runs.

Cypress fell to 13-6, 5-2.

OCC plays host to Riverside Thursday at 2 p.m.

Vanguard 7

POWAY — Jason Dovel went two for five with two runs batted in for the visiting Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Brandon Young (one RBI), Zach Leighton and Tyson Leighton also had two hits apiece for Vanguard (19-4).

The Cougars improved to 14-7-1.

Vanguard will play host to Westmont in a doubleheader Thursday that starts at 11 a.m.

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Brittany Parlopino singled in Angela St. Croix in the 10th inning to help Vanguard University to a 7-6 win and a Golden State Athletic Conference sweep against Hope International Tuesday.

Pitcher Melissa Forrester struck out five in her three-hit, complete-game victory in the Lions’ 1-0 first-game win.

St. Croix and Kimberly Skgolund had two hits each for Vanguard (16-10, 4-4 in conference).

Amanda Omahen went one for three and scored the Lions’ run in the first inning. She stole second and third. Second baseman April Glenn put the ball in play, allowing Omahen to score on an error by the shortstop.

Stephanie Leisenring went one for four with three runs batted in and a walk in the second game, in which Omahen go two for five with three runs and an RBI.

Hope International dropped to 10-16, 0-10.

The Lions will play in the Sunwest Tournament today, opening against Suffolk at noon. They will then face Puget Sound at 2 p.m.
