With his wacky rhymes and silly illustrations, Theodor Seuss Geisel “” better known as “Dr. Seuss” “” introduced an innovative and creative way to engage children in reading and learning.
To commemorate the legendary children’s author and illustrator, Top of the World Elementary celebrated Read Across America on March 5.
The a PTA-sponsored event, started by the National Education Assn., is observed on or around Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March 2, to get youngsters excited about reading.
The schoolwide event began with an introduction to “The Cat in the Hat” (also known as costume-clad Principal Ron LaMotte) and a presentation by second-grade teacher Halle Davidson, who recited from memory her favorite Dr. Seuss book, “Horton Hatches the Egg.”
Guest readers including school board members, dignitaries from the district, community and emergency service officials, and other community volunteers were assigned to a classroom where they read their favorite books to a group of students.
Afterward, the students had time to ask their guest reader questions about what they do to help the community.
Librarian Brandy Mitchell, who implemented the event at Top of the World five years ago, said she was eager to begin a tradition that would bring the school together and celebrate the love of reading.
“It is so important for our children to see the adults in our community have a love of reading and be able to share it with them,” Mitchell said.
“There is so much knowledge that stems from reading. As adults we must lead by example and show our children how amazing books really are.”
LaMotte agreed that the event is a benefit to all involved.
“This program spotlights our local dignitaries and their love of reading, which is an inspiration to our students and staff,” he said.
The inaugural Read Across America took place in 1998.
