Is a shopping trip to Paris out of your budget? Darren Calkins has brought the Parisian experience to Costa Mesa, with his jewel box of a shop: Paris to the Moon.
The store is a collection of exquisitely funky ephemera from around the world that makes for the perfect gift (or self-bestowed treat). Current offerings include glittery paper princess crowns, vintage-inspired tea towels and a collection of garden gnomes. We spoke with Calkins and his store manager, Kerri Judd.
How did Paris to the Moon come about, and what’s the store concept?
KJ: We opened in 2001. It’s been about nine years now. Darren just wants it to be a shop that people remember, and so he tries to carry the most unique things he can find. We’re Paris to the Moon — and everything in between.
Could you describe your product range?
DC: I’m always shopping, whether it’s a Japanese market, Little Korea or a Mercado. I don’t like walking into a store and knowing where all the things came from. And with the Internet, I can have anything in the world here in three days. Where else can you find a Taj Mahal night light?
KJ: Darren also is involved in FG & Co., a paper company, so we have unique gift tags and wrap as well. Everybody comes in for their fairy dust, because everybody needs a little magic right now. Our prices range from 25 cents on up to $300.
Who’s your typical clientele?
KJ: Very creative, artistic people of all ages are the ones who really get the store. Guys and girls both like it.
