Newspaper seeks education reporter

The Daily Pilot is looking for a reporter to put a human face on -- and break hard-hitting stories for -- the education beat. The beat covers the school districts of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, local community colleges and UC Irvine.

This is a premier beat at the paper, requiring a unique mix of reporter and writer. We need someone able to put names to policies, to hold teachers, principals and school board members accountable, and someone unafraid of irritating the powerful in the pursuit of truth. But we also need someone with a passion with covering school bus rodeos, elementary school assemblies, and high school engineering competitions.

Requirements: two years of experience on a daily newspaper (non-negotiable), remarkably clean copy, in-depth knowledge of Orange County (also non-negotiable) and a competitive spirit.

Preferences: school district/high ed experience, fluent in Spanish, passion for social networking, web and SEO knowledge.
