Hat trick for Langston
Evan Langston scored his first hat trick of the season for the Red Dragons of the boys’ seven-and-under division in AYSO Region 97 action.
Two of Langston’s goals came unassisted against the Big Red Fire Dragons. Devin Fairchild provided an assist. In the third quarter, Brandon Kincaid dribbled the ball across the field before scoring. Tim Badum scored with a shot from the right side just inside the box. In the final minutes, Justin McCoy, coming across the mouth of the goal from the right, amazed his coaches and parents after carefully placing the left foot shot out of the goalkeeper’s reach. It was Aedan Skellern who by all accounts was the player of the match with his total midfield presence and ability to control the movement of the Red Dragon offense. Defensively, the Red Dragons kept the opposition at midfield.

The Red Team 3, Romero 2: The Red Team claimed first place in the standings after a hard-fought game at Harper Field. They opened up the scoring by a brilliant pass from Cooper Peters to Griffin Burke. Liam Tough, Sean Arnold and Spencer Swanson had to work hard to stop a number of attacking chances by team Romero. Maxwell Spruill, Henry Levis and Michael Nieto disrupted many passes in the middle of the field. Their pressure almost paid off when Sohrob Goodarzy crossed to Peters. Alex Michaelson came very close to scoring in the second half, his long-range shot was inches away from the top bar. Brian Shaw scored the decisive goal. Shaw’s left-footed shot secured the win for The Red Team for its seventh straight victory this season.

Garrett Gritzmacher had two shots on goal in the second quarter and as goalie in the fourth quarter, made three saves. Griffin Brockhoff had a shot on goal in the first, played a great defense in the third and had several runs with the ball and shots on goal in the fourth. Marcus Croxson played a consistent defensive game, clearing the ball to pass it to his teammates upfield.
Newport FC vs. Raptors: Newport FC captains Garrett Gendron and Bobby Schulze led the team in a tough 1-0 playoff opening loss. It was a much improved rematch, however, thanks to the entire team effort. Jack Pitchess, Lucas Mowery and Schulze controlled much of the center play throughout the contest. Flankers Thomas Vredenburgh, Hunter Bostwick, Julian Hernandez and Gendron put in a tireless performance. Kyle Burger, Justan Gizer and John Bush embraced the sweeper role against a very potent attack. Gizer and Bush also courageously parried several shots during keeper duties. This week’s Game Ball honors went to Gizer.

GI Joes vs. Lightning Cobras: An exciting game was played by both teams. In the first quarter, the Joes’ Michael Gallegos and Blake Jackson led the offense with many shots on goal. Will Schneider and Dylan Miller kept the Joes in the game with a tough defensive stand. Also on defense, Nicholas Sharamitaro let nothing through while in the goal. The Joes were helped immensely by a pair of Jacks, Jack Bibb and Jack Flores owned the field with stunning displays of speed and heart. Karim Kaylani held tough on offense, while Charlie Durham impressed the crowd with his ball handling. Brett Johnson gave the team something to celebrate in the last quarter with a gritty goal while surrounded by defenders.

Fighter Jets vs. Orange Crush: The Fighter Jets had a scary battle on their hands during a Halloween game against the Orange Crush. The Fighter Jets were down to a skeleton crew for the game, with two teammates absent. The Fighter Jet offense seemed to be under a witch’s spell; although Marcus Miller and Finn McClintock had several shots on goal, some ghostly force kept them out of the net. The Fighter Jet defense was much more spirited. Richie Rimlinger was not at all spooked while in the goal in the second half, making some good saves. Dane Voorhees was like a spider, with his legs making defensive kicks in all directions. Driving the Orange Crush batty with their blocks and stops were Joseph Whelan and Jerome Snyder. Kaiyo Freyder was very brave after being hit in the stomach late in the game with a high-flying ball that struck him like stake hitting a vampire.
