RIVERSIDE — Junior Spencer Thompson scored in the 63rd minute with an assist from junior Jorge Reyes and junior keeper Victor Chinchilla had three saves for the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Wednesday.
UCI (13-5, 6-3 in conference) moved within one point of second-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and needs only a tie in Saturday’s regular-season finale at home against Cal State Northridge to earn a home match in the first round of the four-team Big West Tournament.
UCI holds the tiebreaker with the Mustangs, having beaten them, 2-1, on Oct. 21.
Should UCI finish third, it would visit Cal Poly in the tournament semifinal.
UC Santa Barbara clinched the regular-season crown with a 0-0 tie against Cal Poly Wednesday.

COSTA MESA — The host Pirates fell, 25-13, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-13, in the Orange Empire Conference match Wednesday, dropping into a three-way tie for first in the conference.
Poerava Gantt led the Pirates (14-2, 8-2 in conference) with 23 kills and 20 digs and setter Kimya Jafroudi had 37 assists.
Libero Nikki Osuna had 37 digs for OCC in the two-hour match.
Rachel Freeno chipped in 22 digs for OCC.
OCC, Cypress and Irvine Valley are the tri-leaders. IVC visits Cypress Friday, when OCC plays host to Riverside.
Marina Samoa amassed 26 kills and 40 digs for the Chargers.
