Police: They pried doors open

Police continue to search for clues in two weekend burglaries at offices in Newport Beach where more than $50,000 worth of cash and electronics were stolen.

Four businesses were burglarized at 1600 Dove St., and the burglar — or burglars — made off with $34,600, police said.

According to police, the businesses were all locked, and the burglar either pried the doors open or picked the locks. At one of the businesses, $15,000 worth of laptops was stolen.

Costa Mesa City Councilwoman Katrina Foley’s law office was among those targeted.

She said a key was found broken in the lock, but nothing was stolen.

Not far away, at 3900 Westerly Place, someone broke into a business but didn’t appear to steal anything.

Seven companies at a business complex at 180 Newport Center Drive were also burglarized.

The businesses there lost $15,452 worth of equipment and cash, police said. One investment firm had a TV, computers and its clients’ credit card information stolen, according to police logs.

Some offices were ransacked. At one location, a man’s leather case worth $20, which carried his toothbrush, was taken.

Electronics such as wireless routers, computers and monitors were the biggest losses in the weekend burglaries.

In most of the cases, the burglar or burglars pried open the front door to the businesses, but, in at least one case, the burglar apparently had a key to the door.

Newport Beach police are looking into whether the cross-town burglaries were linked.
