Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Stages ‘Sit In’ The Theme: Say BOO to Diabetes!

Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Stages “Sit In” (instead of Walking) for 2nd Year in a Row, to Raise Money for Diabetes Research. The Theme: Say BOO to Diabetes!

The Shooting Stars, a family team for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes 2009, will gather early this year, on Sunday, October 25, 2009, at the home of Richard and Joanne Milo in Corona del Mar. Instead of raising money by walking, they will stage a Protest/Sit In, starting at 9am, to raise money and support to find a cure for diabetes. They will also share in renewed friendships and camaraderie, over coffee and French homemade pastries, amidst lots of talk and laughter.

Joanne Milo started this team 14 years ago … and has been living with Type 1 diabetes for almost 45 years. As a result of a possible complication of the disease, she is wearing a full walking cast (actually looking like blue snakeskin and decorated with lots of “bling”) on her left leg and cannot walk again this year. Therefore, her entire team of family and friends, in support, will also NOT walk … but rather stage the Sit In / Protest … they will SIT in the house, SIT in the yard, SIT around while raising money for research. They will bring musical instruments and NOT play them, bring utility bills and NOT pay them. They might even WALK, in protest to the protest!

We expect over 60 family and friends to participate, all in “protest” about diabetes. Several “sitters” are diabetic themselves. Joanne’s mother, Audrey Lane Laufer (one of the original JDRF Chapter Presidents on Long Island, NY in 1973), sponsored this year’s team bandana, always a unique design created by LouiseEganDesign of Irvine. And several board members of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Orange County are expected to attend to “protest.”

Irvine Spectrum Rotary Club has been a long time, strong supporter of the Shooting Stars, having contributed over $35,000 over the past 13 years.

In the past 13 years, the Shooting Stars have raised over $100,000. Sponsors include Irvine Spectrum Rotary Club, LouiseEganDesign, Audrey Lane Laufer, 3DogArt , Newport Beach Medical Associates and Shape Up Chiropractic.

We welcome and encourage the press to see the community in action, pulling together to help and create awareness and raise money.
