Newport captures crown

LA MESA — Newport Harbor High defeated Scripps Ranch, 2-1, in sudden-death penalty strokes to claim the championship of the Helix Tournament Saturday at Helix High. Senior Claire Layton converted the first penalty stroke for the Sailors, for whom junior goalie Sydney King then made a stick save on a Scripps penalty shot to her right to end the match.

Senior Claire Ramser scored in regulation for the Sailors, who won all five of their matches in the tournament, which began Friday.

The Tars defeated Patrick Henry, 4-1, in the semifinals. Also Saturday, Newport defeated Helix, 2-0, and The Bishop’s, 2-0.

Newport opened the tournament Friday with a 6-0 win over Madison High.

“We went down to see how we would do against San Diego schools and we ended up winning the tournament,” Coach Devon Kelly said. “It’s a huge deal.”

GIRLS’ GOLF

Sunset League finals

CHINO HILLS — Newport Harbor High senior Lauren Draganza shot even-par 37 on the first day of the Sunset League individual championships Monday, putting her in third place heading into today’s final 18-hole round at Los Serranos Golf Course.

Newport Harbor’s Morgan Moody and Charlotte Skjonsby each shot 40 and are tied for fourth place. Ali Thomas carded a 46.

Newport Harbor Coach Scott Tarnow said Casey Jones (attending class) and Lindsey Hanna (foot) did not compete.

The top seven in the two-day event advance to the CIF Southern Section individual tournament at Landmark At Hemet Golf Club on Nov. 2.
