Edison earns big win

The scene was electric, and in the end the Edison High football team showed the heart that has made it the new top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division.
The Chargers (4-0) owned formerly top-ranked Servite in the trenches to take a 23-9 win last Friday night at Huntington Beach High. Matt Viles threw a touchdown pass to Jeff Trojan and ran for another score, while Wade Houston also found the end zone on the ground.
“We were pretty confident,†Edison Coach Dave White said. “We have a lot of seniors who felt like maybe we should have won last year, and we had a great off-season. We respected the heck out of [Servite] and really felt like they were the No. 1 team, but we were really confident. We don’t feel like this is an upset. We felt like we could play with them, and our kids really played well.
“A lot of kids stepped up and had their best games tonight. We told them big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games, and I think we had a lot of kids do that tonight.â€
Edison plays Mater Dei (3-1) at 7 p.m. tonight at Santa Ana Stadium. It’s the final nonleague game for the Chargers, also the top-ranked team in Orange County and No. 6 in the state according to Calhisports.com.
?Another local team, Huntington Beach (1-2), is looking to build on its first win of the season after taking care of rival Marina, 31-7, on Sept. 24. The Oilers play at Westminster (2-1) Friday. Senior running back Jack Dilbeck (149 yards, one touchdown) and senior quarterback Sean Guite (two touchdowns) had strong games against Marina for the Oilers, who also got a receiving score from Kaller Roemer.
“I thought offensively in the first half, we were unstoppable,†Oilers Coach Eric Lo said. “Three drives, three touchdowns, which is pretty impressive. It’s a rivalry game, and these kids got up for it. They were not going to lose.â€
The Vikings (0-3), meanwhile, scored on junior Nick Dallas’ six-yard touchdown run but failed to score again, despite interceptions from Mitch Huffman and Kai Ane. They’ll look for their first win when they play host to Aliso Niguel (1-2) at 7 p.m. tonight at Westminster High.
“We just need to get to a point where we can perform consistently, execute consistently,†Coach Dan Petrone said. “We’ve just got to figure things out and pull it together. Any of the three games we’ve played so far, we could have won, but in order to win you’ve got to execute.â€
