Newport Harbor Lutheran Church and the Hoag Hospital Foundation have committed to donating $20,000 this year to the Costa Mesa-based nonprofit the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen.
The soup kitchen, which serves hot meals on a daily basis to needy people in Costa Mesa, has seen a drop in charitable donations in the past year because of the bad economy.
The Rev. Brad Stienstra of Newport Harbor Lutheran gave the soup kitchen a check for the first installment of $6,000 on Thursday.
The church will donate an additional $4,000 to the soup kitchen in $1,000 installments through December every time a group of six or more church parishioners volunteer at the soup kitchen.
The Hoag Hospital Foundation also has committed to donating an additional $10,000 in matching funds to the soup kitchen.
