Evans on hand at swim event

Laguna Beach resident Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic gold medal winner, was in attendance Sunday in Corona del Mar to lend her support to the Swim For Life Foundation’s water safety awareness-raising ocean swim.

She congratulated the 250 swimmers, including fellow Olympians and other local residents of all ages who are passionate about water safety, as they completed the one-mile, non-competitive swim. The ocean swim was an effort to promote Swim For Life’s “Safer 3” drowning prevention program.

Other notable participants included John Mykkanen (’84 Olympics), Bruce Furniss (’76 Olympics) and Steve Pickell (’76 Olympics). UC Irvine student Stephanie Gabert, a former swimming standout at Corona del Mar High, was the first to complete the non-competitive swim.

“The awareness-rains swim represents an awesome collaboration among safety personnel and local residents who are passionate about staying safer in the water,” Swim for Life Foundation founder and President Johnny Johnson said in a statement. “We live in a culture where being in, on and around the water is very popular, and it is absolutely vital to spread the message of how it can be enjoyed in a safer way for all ages.”
