The Golden West College football team battled but was edged by rival Orange Coast, 24-21, Saturday at Orange Coast College.
The Rustlers (0-3) were down, 24-14, with less than a minute to go, but quarterback Mike VanDeripe (269 yards) threw his third touchdown pass of the game to Brandon Grissom with 13 seconds left. After Golden West recovered the onside kick, a 53-yard field-goal attempt by Eric Torres was well short.
Orange Coast came into the game ranked No. 19 in the state and No. 11 in Southern California. The all-time series record is now tied, 20-20-2.
Bryce Brantley, an Edison High product, was in on three sacks for the Pirates.
In women’s soccer, Golden West fell to Irvine Valley, 2-1, on Tuesday. Brittany Woodward scored the lone goal for the Golden West (0-7), assisted by Bree Neubauer.
In women’s water polo, Annika Bergesen had a team-high five goals as Golden West topped Cypress, 19-5, on Sept. 16 to improve to 6-0.
Golden West also includes former HBHS standouts Alex Hart and Danielle Jennings, as well as Edison alums Gabrielle Mucci and Tamara Towgood.
