Anteaters remain on a roll

RIVERSIDE — Freshman Mar Rodriguez and junior Tanya Taylor scored to lead the UC Irvine women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Bowling Green in the UC Riverside Tournament Sunday.
The win extended the Anteaters’ unbeaten streak to eight games.
UCI (7-1-1) is 7-0-1 since dropping its season opener at Arizona State. During that stretch, Coach Scott Juniper’s squad has outscored opponents, 19-3. UCI, ranked No. 6 in the West Region, has allowed just one goal in its last six matches.
Junior goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere had two saves to post her fifth shutout of the season, the 17th of her career.
Taylor and Rodriguez share the team lead with four goals apiece, matching Dana Sanderlin’s total.
Freshman Devon Delarosa and Milana Shabestari had assists in the 27th and 84th minute, respectively, against the Falcons (4-5).
UCI posted a 23-5 edge in shots.
Azusa Pacific 1, Vanguard 0
COSTA MESA — The visitors scored in the fifth minute in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener Monday.
It was the first goal allowed and the first loss this season by Vanguard (4-1).
APU is 4-1.
MEN’S SOCCER
UC Irvine 2, Sacramento State 0
IRVINE — Senior Irving Garcia and junior Spencer Thompson scored to propel the No. 16-ranked Anteaters in the nonconference home match Sunday.
Garcia scored on an assist from Thompson in the seventh minute.
Thompson’s goal came on a breakaway, as goalie Andrew Fontein provided the assist with a long punt.
Fontein had seven saves to record the shutout, his fourth of the season.
The Anteaters face Princeton in a nonconference contest Friday at 1:30 at the San Diego Sports Deck.

NorCal Tournament
STANFORD — Senior Cole Bielskis scored a career-high five goals to lead No. 8-ranked UC Irvine to a 9-6 win over Pepperdine in the seventh-place game Sunday at Stanford University.
Brandon Johnson had two goals and Matt Johnson made five saves for UCI (6-2), which defeated Loyola Marymount, 7-6, in the seventh-place semifinal earlier Sunday.
James Frank led UCI with three goals against LMU, against which Matt Johnson had 10 saves.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Dick McGuire Invitational
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sophomore Joy Trotter and junior Hillary Packard tied for 24th to lead UC Irvine to a ninth-place team finish Sunday at the University of New Mexico.
Trotter and Packard finished with a 54-hole total of 224 in the 18-team event.
Victorious Pepperdine was 39 shots better than the Anteaters’ 898.

UC Riverside Invitational
RIVERSIDE — The Vanguard University women’s team posted a school-record combined time of one hour, 33 minutes, 32 seconds to finish 17th in the 27-team field Saturday.
Sophomore Megan Williams led the Lions, finishing 39th in 17:54 over 5,000 meters.
The Vanguard men, ranked No. 19 in the NAIA, finished 13th among 30 teams, paced by junior Christian de Glymes (48th in 25:27 over 8,000 meters).
