UCI wins title

LOS ANGELES — Kari Pestolesi earned Most Valuable honors for the third time this season and led UC Irvine to the Crowne Plaza LAX Tournament title Saturday at Gertsten Pavilion.

The No. 20th-ranked Anteaters (9-1) defeated Loyola Marymount in the championship match, 26-28, 25-18, 25-14, 25-21. Juliane Piggott, a Corona del Mar High product, recorded a match-high 18 kills and had just one error in 32 swings for a .531 hitting percentage. Pestolesi added 17 kills and 14 digs. Riley Cropper, an all-tournament team selection, had 10 kills. Kristin Winkler, also on the all-tournament team, had a team-high 15 digs, and Lauren Souto registered a career-high 10 digs. Taryn Robertson amassed 44 assists with eight digs.

SAN DIEGO — Briana Fields had 14 kills to lead the Pirates to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 Orange Empire Conference win Friday.

Karlee Skalla added 11 kills, while Nikki Osuna had 24 digs and Kimya Jafroudi had 28 assists for OCC (2-0, 1-1 in conference).

UCI wins big

REDLANDS — UC Irvine, ranked No. 8, opened its season with 21-8 victories over Chapman and the University of Redlands Saturday in the Inland Empire Classic.

Greg Enloe scored five goals, James Frank four and Cole Bielskis three in the 21-8 win over Chapman. Griffin Lerman and Tom Kruip added two goals apiece for the Anteaters, who built a 12-3 halftime lead.

In the 21-8 win over host Redlands, Tom Kruip led the way with five goals and Brandon Johnson scored four. Frank added three with Bielskis and Enloe scoring two each. Matt Johnson had 10 saves.
