UCI suffers first loss

LOS ANGELES — The No. 20-ranked Anteaters suffered their first loss of the season after the nonconference match Tuesday at USC.
Kari Pestolesi and Juliane Piggott had six kills each to lead UCI (6-1). The No. 15-ranked Trojans (6-1) won, 25-16, 25-19, 25-20.

Orange Coast 1, Long Beach 0
LONG BEACH — Taryn Bales scored in the 58th minute to help the Pirates improve to 4-0 after the nonconference game at Long Beach City College Tuesday.
Bales took a long breakaway pass down the left side from Sarah Gomez and beat LBCC freshman goalkeeper Sara Thatcher for the game-winner. OCC goalie Claudia Airas posted seven saves.
The Vikings fell to 2-3.
The Pirates narrowly edged LBCC in shots, 18-15.
MEN’S SOCCER
Orange Coast 5, Glendale 1
COSTA MESA — Jordan Gorman scored twice and assisted on another goal in the Pirates’ nonconference match Tuesday.
Adrian Buonanoce, Dean Regis and Christian Celis each scored goals for OCC (3-1).
Takuma Hori assisted on Gorman’s first goal. Hori sent a cross and Gorman scored in the first minute.
Gorman’s second goal put the Pirates ahead, 2-1. He finished a header in the 42nd minute off a cross from Sean Galloway.
OCC goalkeeper Zakre Silva made five saves.
The Pirates play host Long Beach City Friday at 4 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Concordia def. Vanguard
IRVINE — Kelsey Wirt finished with 14 kills and 20 digs for the Lions, but No. 2-ranked Concordia won the Golden State Athletic Conference opener, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, Tuesday.
Jamie Heenan, a former Newport Harbor standout, had 12 kills and nine digs for Vanguard (6-4, 0-1 in conference).
