Yes, they canstruct

Ten massive sculptures made out of more than 23 tons of canned food were unveiled at South Coast Plaza on Saturday.

Volunteers from 10 Orange County companies who participated in the 2009 Canstruction event worked late into the night Friday to have the displays ready for shoppers to ogle Saturday morning.

The sculptures will be at the shopping center until Sept. 27, when the canned goods will be donated to the Orange County Food Bank, which is experiencing a food shortage due to a growing demand for its services.

Awards for the best canned food sculptures will be given out at the 2009 Canstruction Awards Gala, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 13.
