Newport Beach business embraces new media and social networking to expand to national retailers and attract Amazon.com
In March 2009, Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch, featured a virtually unknown Newport Beach, Calif-based company, Daddy Cakes®, in an online small business report “What recession? Even in economic downturn, some small firms continue to grow – and hire” (https://www.marketwatch.com/story/here-five-small-firms-growing-hiring?dist=msr_1). That month, Daddy Cakes Founder Dan Byers was nominated for the Orange County Business Journal’s “Excellence in Entrepreneurship†award. Originally in the middle of the thriving commercial real estate industry, Byers managed to escape somewhat unscathed when the economy began its downward spiral two years ago and went on to launch a line of pancake mixes, better known as Daddy Cakes®.
Daddy Cakes® is a perfect example of a cutting-edge, young company that has embraced new media to connect with its customers. Believing the customer experience doesn’t begin and end with the actual product, Daddy Cakes engages & responds to its customers through its website and social media sites like Facebook (https://www.Facebook.com/DaddyCakes), Twitter (https://www.Twitter.com/DaddyCakes), MySpace (https://www.MySpace.com/DaddyCakesBakery), LinkedIn (https://www.LinkedIn.com/in/Daddycakes), Flickr (https://www.Flickr.com/photos/DaddyCakes), Digg (https://Digg.com/users/DaddyCakes) and Friendster (https://www.Friendster.com/DaddyCakes).
In January 2009, the brand was only available at https://www.DaddyCakesBakery.com and in a handful of specialty markets in Orange County. By July 2009, Daddy Cakes had expanded to major metropolitan areas in more than 50 retail outlets, including Whole Foods Markets, Central Markets, Sprouts Farmers Markets, and the world’s largest e-tailer, Amazon.com. In fact, in Southern California, they are available throughout Orange County and up through Long Beach into Santa Monica and at the Beverly Center. In Northern California, they can be found in the San Francisco Bay area and Saratoga; in Colorado, in Telluride, Montrose and Grand Junction; and in Texas, in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. They are also available in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Bend, Oregon; and Park City, Utah.
“In such a tough economic climate, Daddy Cakes has been referred to as a ‘recessionaire,’†commented Dan Byers. “In addition to the instrumental role that social networking has played in our success, the economic downturn set the stage for Daddy Cakes, as many families stay in for meals.â€
To achieve such widespread distribution in such a short time, Daddy Cakes® has benefited from social media combined with grassroots community involvement and fundraising, that has helped many community-based organizations raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations.
Daddy Cakes® produces nine flavors of pancake and waffle mixes – all vegetarian, six of which are vegan and three of those organic. Providing flavorful and wholesome alternatives to the many pancake mixes on the market, they utilize real fruit, whole grains and organic flour to create a variety of delicious flavors.
