Police: Transients may have started fire

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of a weekend fire they believe was caused by transients, police officials said. Just before midnight Saturday, firefighters were called to the 300 block of West Coast Highway to put out a fire in an abandoned business awaiting demolition.

Witnesses in the harbor saw smoke coming from the building and called authorities. The large blaze engulfed the building and took 45 minutes to extinguish, fire officials said. Twenty-three firefighters helped put down the flames. Transients appeared to have started the fire, but there have been no arrests, said Sgt. Shontel Sherwood.
