Corona del Mar High School:

Alison Dort

Corona del Mar High School Senior Alison Dort thinks about her dad when she plays first base or center field on the school’s varsity softball team.

Her dad, Lynn Dort, who coached her throughout her softball career, died after battling cancer in 2004.

“It’s something that really reminded me of all the time I spent with my dad, so it’s kind of special,” Alison said. “It’s really kept me going.”

The faculty at Corona del Mar awarded Alison this year with the E.I. Moore award for outstanding citizenship, honesty and integrity. She also was selected as most valuable player on her softball team.

Dort was one of the driving forces behind the school’s Peer Assistance Leadership program at Corona del Mar over the past year, which puts on an annual day of speakers and panel discussions to promote tolerance at the school.

The program also helps make new students feel welcome at Corona del Mar.

“I wanted to be that friend for new students I wished that I had on the first day of school,” she said.

Alison still plans to play intramural softball after high school. She’s going to spend a year taking classes at OCC, before transferring to Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where her sister also goes to school.

“I fell in love with the school, because I wanted to be at a Christian university not too far from home, but not too close,” she said. “It was just a feeling this was a place for me.”
