St. Joachim’s Big Win

Submitted by Erin Kinder & Jennifer Miller

St. Joachim school had a phenomenal day today with two wins for the 1st place title. The first win 5-3 was against Pomona elementary. Cole Schattinger started the streak with the first goal; Cole McFetter assisted. Then Pomona came on strong and the defense, Carter Chapman, Cole Kinder, Sam Miller, and Michael Lehman had to work hard to defend the goal. Pomona tied up the game with a penalty kick. The teams continued to fight for the ball, but Pomona scored again. The Sea Kings couldn’t be beat, though, and Spencer Morrison, D.J. Van Oostendorp, and McFetter worked their offensive magic just before the half.

Jake Thomas came out of the half wanting a score. He threw it in to Schattinger who scored the second goal. Pomona didn’t give up and worked the defense hard. Chapman saved another goal. Hunter Hall played a tough defense. Thomas assisted Chandleer Siemonsma for St. Joachim’s third goal. Almost immediately after that, Siemonsma passed it to Schattinger who lobbed the ball right over the keeper’s head for the next St Joachim goal. Ryan Del Valle hustled to get the ball back. Sam Miller assisted Siemonsma with the fifth and final score. Pomona fought hard and scored its third goal. The teams battled back and forth until the whistle blew. St. Joachim 5, Pomona 3.

The second game today was against Mariners Christian school. Both teams came to win. Mariners Christian scored the first goal and the St Joachim defense was in shock. They quickly determined that this game was not going to be lost and found some energy to come back stronger. Lehman sent the ball to Miller who sent it to McFetter who then assisted Siemonsma for the first St Joachim goal. Game tied. Hall then had to fight in midfield for the ball. Thomas took over and made a shot on goal which was blocked by the Mariners Christian goalie. Mariners Christian kicked the ball and sent it downfield where Kinder headed the ball twice to get it up field. Mariners Christians made two shots on goal which were both stopped by Chapman. Kinder, Lehman, and Miller hustle the ball out of defensive territory and down to the offense. Del Valle grabbed it and assisted Morrison for the second St Joachim goal just before half time. The teams came back pumped up ready to win after half time. Mariners Christian immediately scored their second goal to bring the game to a tie. But not for long. McFetter assisted Schattinger for the third goal. Finally, Siemonsma, assisted by Hall made St Joachims fourth and final goal. The game wasn’t over as Mariners Christian powered down the field wanting to score when again Kinder headered a ball then booted it up to Van Oostendorp. The teams rallied for a bit longer. Mariners Christian almost scored a goal, but Miller (sweeper) and Siemonsma (keeper) saved it. Finally, the whistle blows and the game is over. It was an incredible game played by both teams. St. Joachims 4 Mariners Christian 2.
