YOUTH SCENE:
Players stepped up when needed and the team proved its mettle against some of the best NJB teams around.
Coach Roger Webb said it was really a team effort that helped the Fountain Valley NJB eighth-grade all-stars advance so far.
Fountain Valley wrapped up play at the NJB All-Net National Tournament over the weekend at Chapman University, placing second in the eighth-grade division after falling in overtime, 43-39, to Vallejo.
That was the same Vallejo team, Webb said, that his team had lost to by nearly 20 points in its first game of the tournament. Fountain Valley’s Sean Finley hit a three-pointer at the buzzer in the rematch to send the game into overtime.
“It was a real team effort,†Webb said. “As we went along in this tournament, we grew up a little bit. Our last game against [Vallejo], we competed very well. They didn’t give an inch.â€Â
