Seahawks share top honor
After a special season, the accolades are coming in for the Ocean View High boys’ basketball team.
Junior guards Anthony Brown and Avery Johnson were named the CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA co-Players of the Year on Monday.
In addition, senior guard Mason Jones was named first-team Division IV-AA, while Coach Jim Harris was the division’s Coach of the Year.
Brown averaged 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for the Seahawks (27-8), who routed Inglewood in the Division IV-AA final and advanced to the CIF State Division III title game in Sacramento before falling to Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Johnson averaged 11.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and a team-best 4.3 assists for Ocean View. Jones, the only senior starter, averaged a team-best 12.7 points and was a big leader in the playoffs in helping the Seahawks win their second CIF title and first since 1998.
Several other locals also made the cut for all-division teams. In Division II-AA, Huntington Beach senior Zachary Kimber and Marina senior Garrett James were both first-team selections, while Edison sophomore Dylan Garrity, Oilers senior David Swartz and Marina junior Brendan Holmes earned second-team status.
In Division V-A, Brethren Christian senior Jeff Jefferson earned first-team honors and Warriors junior Austin Loeb was named to the second team.
For girls’ basketball, Edison sophomore Bonnie Samuelson earned first-team Division II-AA honors for the Chargers. Huntington Beach senior Noelani Viloria earned second-team Division II-AA accolades and Marina senior Rita Sitivi earned second-team honors in Division I-A.
