Former longtime Newport Beach resident and

recent resident of Corvallis Oregon, James

Williams passed away while visiting in Bend,

Oregon on March 21, 2009. He was eighty

five. He is survived by Helen, his wife of sixty

three years, his daughters Patty and Suzy, granddaughters

Lisa, Anne, Meg, Julia and Monique, sisters Gloria and

Shirley, and brother Stanley.

James was born in Kansas City, MO, and attended Paseo

High School. He served in the army air corps in WWII as a

bombardier in B-17s and was awarded the purple heart and

bronze star. He flew 25 combat missions over Germany and

Austria and was shot down once.

He graduated from the University of Southern California in

1949 with a degree in pharmacy. He worked for the Upjohn

Company in pharmaceutical sales for thirty six years.

He was an avid tennis player and played for many years with

a group of friends at Marriott Tennis Club, and on the city

courts in Corona del Mar. Jim enjoyed sailing and was a

longtime member of the Balboa Yacht Club. He had served

on the vestry of St James Episcopal church.

He volunteered for fifteen years as a pharmacist at the SOS

clinic in Costa Mesa. He enjoyed working with staff, fellow

volunteers and student interns.

Jim was a devoted husband, grandfather, and friend. His

family will miss him. The family asks that in lieu of flowers,

donations be given in Jim’s memory to SOS clinic in Costa
