WACO, Texas — Senior designated hitter Brock Bardeen hit a grand slam and a three-run home run to help pace the Anteaters in the opening round of the Baylor Classic Friday at Baylor.
Bardeen’s seven runs batted in set a tournament single-game record and helped UCI (6-3) open an 11-2 lead after the top of the second inning.
Bardeen finished two for three, while Cory Olson and Ben Orloff were both two for five to bolster the No. 5-ranked ’Eaters’ 12-hit attack.
Junior catcher Francis Larson his a two-run homer, his second of the season, to up his team-leading RBI total to 12.
Junior left-hander Danny Bibona earned the win, allowing nine hits and three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five.
UAB fell to 3-5.
UCI faces No. 6-ranked Baylor today at 4:30 p.m.

LOS ANGELES — Freshman opposite Carson Clark and sophomore outside hitter Jordan DuFault had 21 kills apiece to help the visiting Anteaters record a 30-26, 30-28, 27-30, 29-31, 15-11 triumph in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday at Pauley Pavilion.
No. 2-ranked UCI (16-3, 11-2 in conference) hit .336 as a team.
Newport Harbor High product Brett Perrine, a junior, had 15 kills and hit .360 for the No. 11-ranked Bruins (8-11, 4-8).

SAN DIEGO — Sophomore outside hitter Jake Melone finished with 16 kills and seven blocks for the Pirates in a 30-19, 30-26, 30-26 Pacific Coast Conference victory Friday.
Michael Stewart contributed 12 kills and seven blocks for OCC (6-3, 2-1 in conference).
Paul Leon had 34 assists, three blocks and two service aces.

IRVINE — Newport Harbor High product Ashling Taylor scored three goals to lead the No. 12-ranked Anteaters in the nonconference home game Friday.
Gianna Rossi and Cortney Collyer added two goals each for UCI (11-4).
No. 10-ranked LMU fell to 7-4.

COSTA MESA — A four-run fifth inning helped host Vangaurd erase a 4-1 deficit to win the first game of a nonconference doubleheader split Friday.
Three of those runs were unearned.
Jennifer Bergh and Brittany Parlopino both had two hits and one run batted in for the Lions (10-7), for whom Kelsey Gunneman earned with win with 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief to improve to 5-2.
Vanguard managed just three singles off Kristen Ghimenti, who went the distance in the second game for Bethany (4-10).
Melissa Forrester allowed one earned run in 5 2/3 innings to absorb the Game 2 loss.
