Chargers girls’ water polo team earns Masters bid
The Edison High girls’ water polo team earned an at-large berth to the CIF Southern Section Masters Tournament, which begins Friday at four pools across Orange County.
Edison, the No. 10-seeded team, will face No. 7-seeded Riverside Poly in its first game Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Newport Harbor High. Should the Chargers win, they would face either No. 2 Newport Harbor or No. 15 Los Osos in a quarterfinal game Friday night at 7:30 at the same venue.
The 16-team Masters Tournament includes the champions and runners-up from all six Southern Section divisions, plus semifinalists from Divisions I and II. But Edison earned one of the available at-large berths.
The Chargers, who finished third in the Sunset League, lost in the wild-card round of the Division I playoffs to Santa Barbara. But Edison Coach Diggy Riley applied for the at-large berth, pointing to his team’s strong results this season.
Edison (18-10) beat Santa Barbara and El Toro in the regular season.
The Masters Tournament final is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at El Toro High.
