Memorial service for Watanabe Sunday at OCC
The memorial service for the late Jourdan Watanabe is now scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Orange Coast College baseball field.
Should it rain, plans are to hold the service in the OCC gymnasium, a school spokesperson said.
Watanabe, a first-team All-Orange Empire Conference catcher in 2008 who was redshirting this season for the Pirates, died early Friday at a hospital after being found at an Irvine business with lacerations to his arms, wrists and torso. The business had its front windows smashed, police said.
A cause of death has not been released.
Watanabe, 20, was honored with a pregame moment of silence at the Pirates’ Saturday home game and his alma mater, Northwood High, is planning to recognize him in some way before its Newport Elks Tournament game Saturday at noon at Northwood.
